Hey guys check it out – I made it to San Diego in one piece!
I arrived in San Diego in the early afternoon on Wednesday, taxi’d to the hotel, walked to the grocery store to buy snacks and lunches for the week, and then finally headed to the convention center to grab badges and check out Preview Night.
With Vasili and Nessa, my current roommates, I spent that afternoon puttering around the convention center. Unfortunately we all found the Preview Night schedule completely underwhelming; the only thing it provided was previews of a few TV shows, none of which any of us cared about. So much for the extra $25 for Preview Night!
The good news, however, was that we got early access to the exhibit hall (whether or not this was part of the Preview Pass is still unknown to us)! This meant that while the crowds were still at times claustrophobia-inducing, they were still much thinner than I anticipate they’ll be for the rest of the week. Huzzah! Early-swag has been obtained!
The highlight of my evening (besides a delicious burger and chocolate shake from Burger Lounge) was getting some fun little freebies from David Malki and Ryan North, the creators of Machine of Death and their brand-new 2nd volume, This Is How You Die. These anthologies are a collection of morbid short stories that revolve around a machine that tells you how you will die by taking a blood sample and then printing out a simple word or phrase. The stories are fabulous and the cheeky silliness of the Malki and North made their booth shenanigans a lot of fun. They had an actual mock-Machine of Death that would print out a card with your predicted death on it: first they’d “take a blood sample” for the machine (dot your finger with a red marker), then they’d feed it into the machines input slot. Finally, man-made beeps and boops included, the machine would “print out” your predicted death card. Apparently, I will die from a Rabid Dog. Exhilarating!
Update: for curious parties, here’s a Vine for the Machine of Death box!
In an extra little twist, I mentioned to David Malki that I was looking forward to the MoD game he just successfully Kickstarted, and because of that (or maybe he was giving them away to everybody, I can’t be sure) he gave me an additional little pack of game cards! I don’t know how exclusive these cards are, but regardless I felt oh-so-special.
And really, that’s about all the happened today! I got some free buttons, a shirt, and a glimpse of Brent Spiner, Marina Sirtis, and Michael Dorne, but not too much else (though I did quietly squee a lot about my Ryan North and David Malki encounter). It’s a good start – we’ll see how tomorrow’s panels turn out! Time for some Sherlock, some John Barrowman, and much much more!
Oh…did I mention I met a Storm Trooper?
